INSIDE MINNA'S FRIDGE

Heidi recently did a post about her fridge and cupboard essentials. Here comes mine! When I'm in a supermarket I always find it quite interesting to see what other people load off their shopping trolleys at the tills. But maybe I'm just exceptionally nosy...

We always have a lot of fruit in the house. The kids have bananas, pears, apples and berries as a snack or a dessert and I like having a grapefruit in the morning or an apple after a meal. And the avocados I eat in my salads or as a part of a snack most days.

Oatcakes are our "biscuits". I'll always have a few in my handbag when out and about with my girls. They're good with a bit of cottage cheese, salt and pepper on top too.

We always have Coconut Water in our fridge. I love it in smoothies to give them a bit of sweetness. The dark chocolate is my other half's... he's somewhat addicted to it. For me I can take it or leave it. Milk chocolate would be a different story. I'd never have a bar in my fridge, it would be in my stomach before I'd get home from the supermarket!

The milk we use mostly is rice milk. The kids and I love a porridge from James Duigan's Clean and Lean Diet book that's made of organic rolled oats, rice or almond milk and cinnamon. It's absolutely delicious!

Everything that's shown in this picture is consumed in large quantities in our household. Organic natural jogurt is something I could eat endlessly and so could the children. I love it just on its own but with nuts and berries it's one of my favourite treats. I've been trying to eat it less recently though as I'm finding that I definitely feel better without eating dairy. At least not very much of it.

The boring looking little tub next to it is hummus, which has been my addiction since I became a clean(ish) eater. It's clean indeed (especially if you make it yourself) but obviously highly calorific so a tub a day like I was doing at some point may not be the best idea ;-)

I make sure that I always have rocket and spinach in the fridge. I eat them with avocado, lemon juice, black pepper and himalayan salt nearly every day alongside a piece of fish, chicken or meat. I find that I don't use lettuce so much anymore, the darker green leaves have more taste to them. Not to mention more goodness.

Photographing our fridge didn't work out that well... the bright light is terrible and most things don't look very nice through a plastic! But on a normal day these shelves will be loaded with berries, vegetables, rye bread, feta cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, meat, fish and chicken. I avoid processed foods and buy as many things as possible organic.

At home all of us eat healthy. It's in a restaurant that our kids might have things like white pasta, chips or pizza. I normally go for the healthy choices when eating out too but you obviously end up consuming more butter, oil, salt and even sugar than you would at home. In a restaurant I also might end up having a sneaky dessert... A cheese cake, ice cream sundae or anything with gooey caramel will always be a winner for me!

What do you have in your fridge?

  1. I am exactly the same with milk chocolate. Can never understand how people keep their treat foods in the house... I have shocking self control at home.

    1. I can't understand those people either! However I must say that I do admire them... wish I had that will power! :-)

  2. My home is also full of fruit: oranges, apples, kiwi-fruits, pineapple, watermelon, grapes, bananas. I also eat avocado with salads. We do have white&rye bread+butter (voimariini)&crackers. Ham, cheese, cucumber, tomatoes etc. Most of the time we don't have fresh fruit during the winter as my mom has loaded my freezer with blueberries, lingonberries, strawberries and blackcurrants (I don't like blackcurrants though...). We also have mom's homemade blackcurrant juice. I suppose we eat healthy food, however we should have more fish! Olive oil and vinegar is a must. Sometimes I buy readymade meatballs or sausages, I admit (80-90% meat). Recently I have been so busy that our au pair has cooked for us at 5pm, as I've been coming home later... I should start cooking more again: I'm not perfect at it.

    1. Sounds like you eat healthy too! I think more and more people are starting to be more aware of what they eat and realising that processed foods are very bad for you. I buy organic sausages for the kids sometimes too but they're a bit different over here, the meat ratio is better as far as I understand. Hated them when I had just moved here, now I love them! That's handy to have your au pair cook for you, I hope she's a good cook! ;-)

  3. PS. Kids eat candy once a week. It is so difficult for me not to touch them: so I suppose I eat candy once a week (small amounts). I have to get rid of it! (I've tossed wine already). I cannot keep any sweet things in any cupboard, I cant resist anything! (37 yr.old)

    1. I could never resist sweets if they were put in front of me... so I'm glad at least yet we don't have a sweet day at home!

  4. I got the Clean & Lean Cookbook last summer, Inspired by you. I have never made anything from it, though. I have browsed and browsed it, sometimes even had it with me at the grocery store. What are your other favorites? Your Top 10? Or even Top 3 to start from?

    1. I don't follow a recipe so often but I improvise whilst trying to follow the clean & lean principles... but the ones I've tried and liked from the book are the porridge, goat's cheese omelette, kale and goat's cheese salad, lentil and beetroot salad, green super salad, roast squash with feta, wasabi tuna, lamb cutlets and roast courgettes.. and I'm sure more but basically I've liked everything I've tried from it! You should definitely try them!

  7. Your diet sound perfect - I wish my fridge would look as healthy as yours ;) Just one thing came into my mind - why rice milk? My understanding is that there is nothing healthy about rice? - am I wrong? Do they add calcium in UK to rice milk? I use soy milk (high in protein and calcium) or oat milk (added calcium + oat is said to be very healthy for you) or almond milk, which you said you use too.
