WORKING IT

On my old blog I used to do food diary posts and talk a little bit about my workout routine. The reason that I haven't done it here yet is that in the past year or so my life has been so crazy and hectic that I very much fell off my routine and created a terrible cycle of dieting and bingeing. It was my decision that as soon as I'd get to France and start a quieter life I'd start training properly again and sort out my diet.

Before having children I never exercised properly. I'd go to the gym regularly for a month and then not go at all for two. And even when I went I fell into the category of women who read a paper whilst lazily pedalling away on a cross trainer, year after year, never seeing any changes in their body or fitness levels. I now know that it's impossible to read whilst working out! IF you're actually working out that is!

After having my first baby I quite quickly got into the best shape of my life. I was determined to shed the baby weight and I did that in a very well planned, healthy way rather than by starving myself. I also started training with a Personal Trainer and learned what it actually meant to work out. Most of my training was high intensity. I saw results quicker than I had ever expected and maintained my routine until I got pregnant again.

After my second baby I again lost most of the weight I had gained and was back in my old clothes in a matter of weeks. However I didn't get into the same workout routine and for some reason started having really bad sugar binges, which meant that I never lost the last few kilos. I can't remember when exactly they started but every week I was on a diet, eating clean for four days and bingeing for three. I worked out but due to one reason or another kept on changing gyms and routines and ended up not really training that hard or regularly. And even if I had it's impossible to out-train a bad diet!

Not being happy with your body is one thing but feeling terrible guilt over your eating is another. It makes you feel very low. This cycle continued on and off until now. Or I should say until a couple of weeks ago. In fact I can even tell you the date of my latest binge... it was exactly two weeks ago. Now you can laugh but this is the longest I have managed not to do it in two years. It's a start.

(Can you spot George the dog??)

I don't know what I weigh right now but I have a pair of trousers that I haven't been able to fit into since having my second child. I haven't been anywhere near able to do them up. After ten days of managing to stay off sugar and bingeing (I've started following James Duigan's clean eating principles and recipes again) plus training regularly in high intensity style (I've found an amazing Personal Trainer at a nearby gym) I decided to see how far I had to go to fit into them again and was so surprised when they slipped on comfortably! That's how bad sugar is for you!! Only ten days without it and my hips were a couple of centimetres smaller. And I do eat. I eat a breakfast, a snack, a lunch, a snack and a dinner every day. I cook everything in plenty of coconut oil, I pour olive oil in my salads and have avocado, nuts and full fat natural yogurt every single day. I just don't eat sugar and processed foods (they're all full of sugar anyway). Good fat doesn't make you fat, sugar does. I've known that for a long time and absolutely believed it but the past couple of weeks have been a great reminder of it.

My goal for this summer is to get back into that shape of my life that I was in three years ago. I don't have scales and I'm not going to get them. I'm going to keep on using the mirror and those trousers as an indication of where I'm at. Dieting and bingeing really makes you feel awful. Eating clean and working out regularly makes you feel strong, healthy, energetic, happy and positive about life. I hope I never loose sight of that again. Of course I will have my moments and I will go through some failures but I'm hoping that telling you guys all this will help me not to stray so easily :-) Apart from that one cheat meal that I've been told to have every week! Last week it came in a format of a dinner out in a restaurant where you just couldn't say no to the numerous courses of delicious food not to mention the different types of bread between the dishes and the to-die-for dessert. I'll tell you more about that meal in another post. I'll also keep you up-to-date on my progress over the summer and start doing posts about my workout routine. Maybe I'll even include a food diary post or two.

I want to wish the best of luck to all the lovely ladies out there wanting to change their lifestyle. It's hard at times but definitely worth it. Why to feel bad forever when you can change it? That's what I'm telling myself when I get tempted by the highly addictive drug called sugar.

Now I'm off to cook myself some yummy dinner. I'd like to say that I'm going to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing evening eating outside listening to the birds sing but that's not going to happen... Our neighbours have been partying non-stop for two days and it doesn't sound like they're about to finish anytime soon. Well at least the music they are playing is pretty good! :-)

FUN FUN FUN IN LPM

I remember doing a post about this restaurant on my old blog many moons ago. I also remember that at least a few readers ended up going there based on my recommendation and very much liking it. So here we go again... One of my favourite restaurants not just here in South of France but possibly just about anywhere in the world, La Petite Maison in Nice. Food is never nothing but absolutely delicious, atmosphere second to none and the service... well it's very good as long as you don't mind that they don't always make you feel the most welcome at the door ;-) Let's not go into details but I guarantee that once you get past that you'll no doubt have an excellent evening.

The tables are decorated with tomatoes and lemons. Which by the way I always eat... I chop the tomatoes up, cover them in lemon juice, salt and pepper and wolf them down whilst waiting for the actual food.

The most incredibly smooth, creamy and tasty scrambled eggs with truffle. There are no words to describe how good it is. Tastes more of cream than eggs but that's probably where the secret lies!

Another delicious starter, tuna carpaccio.

And dover sole. Pan fried with butter. So simple and so good.

For some reason a lot of restaurants in France get their lighting completely wrong. They seem to love bright ceiling lights, which means zero atmosphere and at least for me ruins the experience. La Petite Maison is the opposite and has it absolutely perfect.

This particular evening was at the height of the Monaco GP and Cannes Film Festival so it was even busier and livelier than normally but this is what it very often looks like anyway. Especially during the summer they have a band entertaining diners and getting them up on their feet.

We had fun indeed.

And so did everyone else.

As a dessert they carried heaps of fresh berries to our table.

And my favourite ice cream flavour ever; caramel with lots of the gooey stuff.

There are a few La Petite Maisons around these days but Nice is the original and in my opinion the best one. Having said that they're all extremely good restaurants and definitely worth a visit. At the moment there's one in London, Paris, Cannes and Dubai. The Dubai will be seeing me this autumn!! :-)

MARKET GOODIES

Hi guys! It's been a hot hot weekend here in France. Temperatures reached +30 today! In the morning we decided to hit the Antibes market to get some lovely produce for a bbq lunch. I love getting my veg and fruit from there as you know it's fresh and local.

I'd love to tell you that shopping in the market is cheap but no hope of that... Especially if you love berries and cherries as much as I do!

They don't only sell food. You could go clothes shopping there too!

Or soap shopping!

They sell some beautiful flowers as well.

The market is open every day of the week during summer. If you're holidaying around here you should visit it! In addition to the veg and fruit you can find some delicious cheese, meats and fish.

My shoes of the day, Ancient Greek Sandals, favourites from last summer.

Then it was time for yet another bbq lunch. Beef, lamb and pork...

Beautifully ripe tomato with fresh basil and feta. We found the most delicious salt mixed with garlic, which I sprinkled on top.

That was it, my Sunday of lovely food and family time! I hope you all had a great weekend!

WHAT I WORE: TO DINNER WITH KIDS

Any pictures of me these days seem to have a reoccurring theme... I can't stop pulling faces or silly poses. Sorry. Not sure why that is.

I wore this outfit to a dinner with kids. I still need a big bag when out with them, mainly for Baby M's nappies and other nappy related accessories. I've just started potty training her though and it's started off rather well... A much easier start than it ever was with her big sis. For nearly four years I haven't left home without carrying nappies with me (well I don't intentionally take them out if I'm going out without the kids but sometimes I end up finding them in my handbag anyway) so it will feel odd, and amazing, to be able to do that.

Happy Friday! I'm looking forward to the weekend and getting my other half here from London again.

CLOUDY CLUB 55

The weather until a few days ago was on and off... And the forecast could never get it right. This was one of those days that was forecasted sunny and beautiful but doesn't really look like it does it? I think my serious face goes with the gloomy weather. I wasn't complaining though it still wasn't cold and we headed to St Tropez as planned to have another lovely lunch at Club 55.

Little M's outfit was rather colourful that day. I'm still able to choose her outfits but she's starting to have an opinion too. Hence the necklace...

So again we had the fresh veg as a starter to share. Clean, fresh, healthy and tasty!

Their grilled gambas are in my opinion the best dish on the menu. Always delicious. And they're so huge that you can easily share a portion with someone. On the side I had a green salad. It's basically just crunchy lettuce leaves but the dressing, what ever it is, makes it so tasty that I could eat it forever.

After lunch we had a play on the cloudy beach. Clouds were hardly noticed by the little people.

And I got to wear a Zara scarf that I absolutely love. It was a NYC found last month.

Right now the French Riviera is basking in sunshine and there are no signs of grey clouds. The days are getting warmer but the real difference to only a week or two ago is that the evenings are slowly warming up too. Yay! :-) Now if only the camera charger I ordered would arrive so that I could do some up-to-date posts... I manage to loose my charger more than a week ago. It really has disappeared as if the earth has swallowed it. I feel like I'm missing a limb without my camera!

WHAT I WORE: DEVIL COLOURS AND HAIR RIGHT NOW

Excuse the face but this is where my hair is at right now after having a terrible hair cut last summer and having extensions through the winter. Not short anymore but not long yet either. After being super blonde for years I've finally managed to get the colour so close to natural that I can easily leave it untouched for a few months at a time. I'd like to think that I'm on my way to long, healthy, natural hair! I will never drastically change the colour again and I will never cut it again (I guess I'm going to need a trim or two but you know what I mean). Finally learned my lesson at a humble age of 36! So if any of you out there have long, healthy, beautiful hair and are considering cutting it short... or bleaching it... DON'T! :-) And btw if you're in London and looking for an amazing colourist I can't recommend Wagner at Gina Conway on Westbourne Grove enough.

Enough about hair, this is what I wore to dinner the other night. Comfy in a cardi as I knew we'd be sitting outside and the evenings are still a bit chilly. My leather leggings are in constant use, not sure what I ever wore before I had them!

Cardi: Splendid
Leather Leggings: Joseph
Sandals: Azzedine Alaia
Pouch: Givenchy
Nails: Shellac, Romantica
